PETOSKEY — Petoskey senior Sawyer Webster closes out his final season with the Northmen as the Petoskey News-Review boys’ soccer Area Player of the Year for the 2022 season.
Webster helped lead the Northmen to a third straight district championship within Division 2 this season and was named a Division 2 second team All-State defender by the Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association.
He closed out his final season with 10 goal and 12 assists, becoming perhaps the first-ever Petoskey defender to lead the team in scoring.
Here’s what the first hand view looked like on game days watching Webster:
View from the press box:
Talk about confused, that’s how I felt watching Petoskey’s Sawyer Webster.
It was pretty funny watching him play this season. I couldn’t figure out what position this guy was. His position was everywhere.
He was one of the first defenders I can remember in a while seeing play in the opposing team’s net and taking corner kicks as well. His range was just incredible for the Northmen.
I’d be watching the game and Sawyer would be racing down the sideline with the ball, moving it into an opponents territory and then I’d look down at a photo on my camera or jot down a note. When I’d look back up, he’d be all the way on the other side of the field, thwarting a try by the other team.
His speed and conditioning were phenomenal to go with that range he had.
To be a defender and lead a Petoskey team in scoring at the Division 2 level says a whole lot.
One of the other things that really stood out to me this season was his corner kicks.
In years past, Petoskey had kind of been known as a team that would take the short kick to a teammate on a corner and play it in that way instead.
That seemed to change this season with Swayer taking the majority of the corners. He had a great bend to the ball and even scored directly off a couple corners.
Having Swayer on the field was kind of like having an extra player out there. Like I said, I couldn’t figure out where the heck he played for the longest time.
But, he didn’t need a positon label during the season, Area Player of the Year fits just fine.

View from the sidelines:
Sawyer was the first defender I can ever remember to lead a Northmen squad in scoring. Given all the other attacking weapons we had this season that is a really impressive accomplishment.
He has all the attributes of a modern wingback. He was both fearless and relentless in getting forward to provide width in our attack. This enabled us to create a constant attacking overload on his side.
He was as dangerous in one on one situations, as he was combining with our mids and forwards.
His crossing accuracy really improved this season and he even curled in two direct corner kicks in big moments.
From a defensive standpoint he was solid in both one on one situations and in a covering role.
His passing range and ability to restart our attack was also exceptional.
Sawyer’s energy and effort was off the charts all season.
