Curacao international goalkeeper Eloy Loom and Columbus Crew are finalizing the termination of their mutual contracts, sources said. The Athletic on thursday. Room is close to signing a deal with Dutch club Vitesse.
Room was dethroned as Crewe’s starting goalkeeper this season, but in 2022 he made just three starts after all league appearances. His contract was due to expire after the season, but Columbus retains a club option for 2024.
The 34-year-old Room has made 102 appearances for Columbus and won the 2020 MLS Cup final as a starting goalkeeper. He is the third highest-paid goalkeeper in MLS this season, according to MLSPA salary statistics.
Room spent the first ten years of his career at Vitesse, making 155 appearances for the Eredivisie club. He boasts 46 caps on Curacao.
Columbus manager Wilfried Nancy has his sights on second-year goaltender Patrick Schulte as a starting pitcher in 2023. Schulte, 22, was selected 12th overall in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft. He was named MLS’ Next Pro Goalkeeper of the Year last season.
Crewe sits fifth in the Eastern Conference with 36 points from 22 games. Vitesse finished 10th in the Dutch top league last season.
