The calendar has changed to January 2023. in short, USMNT Technically, we are looking for a new head coach. USMNT head coach Greg Berhalter’s contract officially expired at midnight. Open pre-negotiation for contract extensionwhen everything seemed to float in the air Berhalter’s comment As for Gio Reyna’s “lack of effort” in preparation for the World Cup, it hit the streets.
Thus, his contract quietly expired without any communication from the federation or Verhalter as to whether he would continue as head coach of the USMNT. A shortened World Cup cycle has already begun, with the United States co-hosting the World Cup in just his 3.5 years. In between, there are two Nations Leagues, two Gold Cups, a potential Copa America appearance in 2024 and several friendly matches the team can use to prepare for his 2026 World Cup bid. .
Still, for USMNT fans, there are plenty of candidates who could be hired, or be hired if approached for the job. That’s why we decided to put our fans in the driver’s seat and give the SSFC community a chance to say who they think should be the coach that will lead us through this World Cup cycle. First, let’s take a look at some of the candidates who are either serious or fans want to lead the team.
Jesse Marsh (now: leeds united head coach) – Marsh currently heads Leeds United, but also has USMNT stars Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson on his roster. He has long been a desired candidate among fans and will likely be a popular choice.
Roberto Martinez (currently unaffiliated) – They recently led Belgium to number one in the FIFA World Rankings and finished third at the 2018 World Cup. The 2022 World Cup is eliminated in the group stage.
Jim Curtin (now: Philadelphia Union head coach) – He turned the Union into an Eastern Conference powerhouse while developing several young players who had great success overseas, like Brenden Aaronson and Mark Mackenzie. Recently led Union to his 2022 MLS Cup final. There, he lost on penalties in one of the best matches in league history.
Greg Berhalter (currently USMNT head coach) – The USMNT’s current head coach, his contract expired when the Times Square ball fell on New Year’s Eve. He could be re-signed for a short time or returned for the entire cycle.
Marcelo Bielsa (currently unsigned) – He’s rumored to take over as Uruguay’s head coach, but most recently he was Leeds’ head coach, leading them to the top flight in 2020 for the first time in 16 years.
Joachim Löw (currently unaffiliated) – Most recently he was head coach of Germany, which won the World Cup title in 2014. He also won the 2017 Confederations Cup, leading Germany to the Euro 2008 final.
Pellegrino Matarasso (currently unaffiliated) – The American who brought Stuttgart back to the Bundesliga, he was a man who was under the radar but now has no team. An American coach with experience in his one of Europe’s Big 5 leagues, Matarasso will be an attractive coach.
Tab Ramos (currently head coach of Hartford Athletic) – Tab Ramos is a former USMNT player who spent eight years coaching the USMNT U-20s. houston dynamoHe is currently coaching Hartford Athletic.
Steve Cerundro (now: LAFC head coach) – A legend in the USMNT as a player, the Mayor of Hanover was an assistant to the USMNT in 2018 before moving to the Las Vegas Lights in 2021 after many coaching experiences in Germany. In 2022 he took over LAFC and led the team. to the MLS Cup title in his first season.
Robin Fraser (now: colorado rapids head coach) – Another former USMNT player, Fraser primarily coached in the MLS, was head coach with Chivas USA, and is currently head coach of the Colorado Rapids.
Brian Schmetzer (now: Seattle Sounders head coach) – Considered one of the greatest coaches in MLS history, Schmetzer has made four appearances in the MLS Cup, winning two of them, as well as winning the 2022 Concacafe. champions leagueAs a coach for the USL side, he has won the league twice and the Commissioner’s Cup twice. He has the most stellar track record of any American coach on the list.
Hugo Perez (currently Director of El Salvador)- A former USMNT player who currently coaches El Salvador, he has also spent time with the USMNT coaching system. He has done a great job of bringing in young talent to strengthen El Salvador’s player pool.
David Wagner (currently not affiliated) – Another former USMNT player with Bundesliga and Premier League coaching experience. He famously coached Huddersfield his Town and Schalke 04, with his most recent gig being BSC Young Boys.
Didier Deschamps (Current: France National Team Manager) – They won the 2018 World Cup and led France to the 2022 World Cup final, but lost on penalties. If he leaves France, he could become the world’s most coveted coach.
Tite (currently not worn) – Tite led Brazil to No. 1 in the world rankings and the 2019 Copa America title, but fell short of his goal of winning the World Cup. He may be retired, but he may be persuaded to coach the USMNT for the World Cup on his home turf.
Oscar Pareja (now: orlando city head coach) – Having worked as a coach in MLS and Liga MX, he knows Japanese players very well. He is considered one of the league’s leading coaches.
Jose Mourinho (now: AS Roma head coach) – Special One has won Champions League titles, league titles and trophies in some of Europe’s biggest leagues and has coached some of the biggest teams in the world. His dream is to become a national team coach and the USMNT could be a great challenge for him.
Thierry Henry (Current: Belgian National Team Assistant Coach) – He has coached in the MLS, knows the league well and is one of the greatest players in the history of football. He has won the World Cup as a player and is ready to take over his national team.
Patrick Vieira (currently Crystal Palace head coach)- He also won a World Cup and coached in MLS. He has also coached Ligue 1 and is currently in the Premier League. He would be an interesting option for his USMNT.
