Major League Soccer’s DC United are in talks to sign former Everton midfielder Gilfi Sigurdsson.
The 33-year-old has previously played for Everton, Swansea City, Tottenham Hotspur, Hoffenheim and Reading.
Sigurdsson has not been with the club since leaving Everton when his contract expired in the summer of 2022.
A source with direct knowledge of the situation said the deal is still in the preliminary stages and no formal offer has yet been made.
Any move would see the Iceland national team linked up with former Everton teammate and DC United head coach Wayne Rooney.
Rooney and Sigurdsson both joined Everton in the 2017 summer transfer window and were teammates in the 2017-18 season.
Sigurdsson joined Everton from Swansea for a club-record £45million, scoring 31 goals in 156 appearances for the club.
He made his final appearance for the club on the final day of the 2020/21 season, against Manchester City.
Sigurdsson has made 78 appearances for Iceland, including at Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup.
DC United are ninth in the MLS Eastern Conference and have qualified for the last playoff spot in the division.
