The Lady Titans are coming off of one of their best seasons ever as they beat the odds to claim the Division III championship in November.
Toll Gate was coming off a semifinals appearance the season before and returned much of the same roster. Disaster appeared to strike in the preseason, when three of its projected starters were lost for the season from injuries during scrimmages, including leading scorer Olivia Dutra.
Girls like Kara Yelman, Katie Pale and Morgan Caianiello would fill in those roles and replace the production. The Titans scored more points in 2022 than in 2021.
And despite the massive hit on paper, the Titans hit the ground running by winning their first four league games and then would finish 10-1-2 to take first place in the regular season. The Titans lone loss came against Westerly.
Sure enough, the Titans would continue to roll and reach the championship game against the aforementioned Bulldogs. This time around, though, the Titans would get the victory to claim their second championship in three seasons.
Perhaps the most impressive feat of the year came just prior to the state championship, when the team’s bus was sideswiped in traffic en route to Cranston Stadium. Although the team had a brief scare, it would not flinch as it played its best game of the year to take home the victory. Toll Gate should already be slated as the odds-on favorite for next fall.
Best of the rest: Toll Gate softball, Warwick gymnastics co-op, Toll Gate lacrosse
