The 18-year-old’s selection to the squad for the tournament is a continuation of a remarkable year of USL Championship glory at hometown club Louisville, where he was first called up to the senior U.S. Men’s National Team in April. Since making his Roux City debut at the age of 16 in July 2021, Winder has made 41 appearances throughout the regular season and playoffs of the USL Championship, and was nominated for the league’s Young Player of the Year award last year.
One of the growing trends in the championship is that young players are choosing to join the professional ranks at championship clubs, including examples like Birmingham Region FC’s Matthew Corcoran and Charleston Battery’s Fidel Barajas. “I’m from Louisville,” Winder said. “So having family and friends around every game definitely helps me a lot and for a young player like me it’s just the perfect path.” They give me a lot of time and attention. They paid me. That helps me take the next step, whatever it is.
“Ever since I was young my goal has been Europe, so just playing in Louisville, getting minutes and gaining experience, that helps me move forward.”
