Theo Vasicek and Owen Swenson scored for Redwood as the Giants defeated Tam 2-0 in a battle of MCAL boys soccer title contenders on Tuesday.
Redwood (2-0-1, 2-0-0 MCAL) and Tam (2-1-0, 2-1-0) finished tied for first place on points last season and came into this game with unblemished league records.
The Giants earned a penalty kick in the first minute but Tam’s goalie made the save. Vasicek put Redwood in front in the 20th minute on an assist by Thomas Griffin.
It remained a one-score game until late in the second half when Swenson smashed home a volley off an assist by Jack Corvi.
“Corvi was immense all game, played three different positions and was vital to our ability to shut down their counter attacks since we controlled the game,” Redwood coach Will Finnie said.
• Novato continued its strong start to the season getting goals from Osvaldo Real, Jordy Diaz and Robert Little for a 3-0 victory against Branson (1-2-0, 1-2-1). Little assisted Real in the 8th minute then Diaz scored in the 14th minute to get Novato (3-0-0, 3-0-0) off to a fast start. Little added the third goal in the first minute of the second half.
• Juan Hernandez bagged two goals as San Rafael pulled away late for a 5-2 win against Archie Williams (0-3-0, 0-3-0). Norman Tellez and Hernandez scored in the first half as the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead. Archie Williams equalized in the 55th minute before the Bulldogs (1-1-1, 1-1-1) closed out the game with consecutive goals from Daniel Rodas Diaz, Hernandez and Andre Kfouri.
• Kleber Maldonado and Chris Maldonado scored two goals each as Terra Linda (2-0-0, 2-0-0) stayed unbeaten with a 4-2 win against San Marin. David Barrera and Dominic Sanchez scored goals for the Mustangs (0-2-1, 0-2-1) who have been frisky in all three MCAL games this season.
Sloane Carey and Ava Korich combined for a late goal to lift Marin Catholic (1-0-1) past University Tuesday. Korich assisted on Carey’s goal in the 70th minute.
San Domenico led start to finish as the Panthers (6-0) defeated Redwood Christian 84-49 on Tuesday. Senior Gytis Gervickas and junior Drew Morehouse each hit five 3-pointers, with Gervickas scoring a team-high 21 points and Morehouse tallying 17 points.
Terra Linda High School celebrated the official grand opening of its new gymnasium on Tuesday with a ceremony between Tuesday’s girls and boys basketball games. The new 22,000 square foot space offers a regulation-size competition venue for basketball, volleyball and other indoor sports, and will allow Terra Linda to once again host tournaments and other events.
• Lailah Carey brought down the house with 24 points, five rebounds and four steals for the Mustangs (3-2) in Tuesday night’s 56-37 victory over Redwood. Keeley Wright added 11 points, five steals and five assists, while Kate O’Hara brought home 10 points.
San Anselmo’s Emerson Sullivan was named honorable mention All-Mid-Atlantic men’s water polo. A graduate student for Johns Hopkins, Sullivan leads the Blue Jays with 106 goals and 131 points.
• The pool at Tamalpais High School will be the scene of two separate water polo camps featuring two elite players from Europe, hosted by the San Francisco Water Polo Club. The first camp, December 19-22, will focus on fundamentals and will be led by four-time Olympian Dénes Varga from Hungary. The second camp, December 26-29, focuses on how to put the ball in the net and will be led by two-time Olympian Albert Español from Spain. Visit sfwaterpolo.com for more information.
