Nottingham Forest are among the clubs considering an attempt to lure Weston McKennie away from Leeds United.
Forest, who are 13th in the Premier League standings, are interested in signing the 24-year-old midfielder before Tuesday’s deadline.
athletic Earlier on Saturday, Leeds reported they were sticking to talks with Juventus as they seek to complete a third major signing in January before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.
But Leeds, who also want to sign McKennie on loan with a buy option, face second-half competition from Forrest and others as interest in the USMNT player grows.
Juventus are keen to quickly get the money back for McKennie, which he acquired from Schalke in 2020.
Leeds decided to move to McKennie after a conversation with head coach Jesse Marsh.
He will be the third USMNT squad member to move to Elland Road in the past year, following Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson.
But Forest are also hoping to sign the midfielder following the arrivals of Danilo and Chris Wood.
Forest are also in talks with Paris Saint-Germain over a deal for veteran goalkeeper Keylor Navas.
Navas, the Costa Rica international and former Real Madrid stopper, has been down the pecking order in Paris and is open to action, seeking regular first-team football.
Forrest wants to sign the goalkeeper. That’s because their number one, Dean Henderson, has suffered a thigh injury that has ruled him out of many important matches.
