sacramento, california — Sacramento Republic FC announced Friday that the club has signed forward Russell Cicerone ahead of the 2023 USL Championship season. This transaction is pending league and federation approval. Per club policy, the terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Todd Dunivant, President and General Manager of Republic FC, said: “I feel he fits perfectly into our system and has the mentality to drive our attack.”
The Michigan native spent two seasons with fellow USL Championship Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC before joining Republic FC, adding 16 goals in 2021 and another 15 in 2022. added to lead the team. He gave chances to his teammates, recording 14 of his assists and creating 76 chances. His 8 assists in 2021 made him the only player in the league to rank in the top 10 for both goals and assists. After being nominated for three Team of the Weeks and scoring the first hat-trick in Hounds history, he was nominated for Player of the Month in August 2021.
Prior to joining the Hounds, Cicerone spent two seasons with St. Louis FC, making 51 appearances with 10 goals and 3 assists. He helped the team advance to his 2020 Eastern Conference Semifinals. He also appeared for FC Cincinnati in 2018, adding one goal in ten appearances.
Cicerone’s professional career began in 2017 when he was selected 76th overall by the Portland Timbers in the MLS SuperDraft. He later joined the club’s USL side, the Portland Timbers 2, for the season, scoring one goal in 29 appearances. He was also called up to play for his MLS side of Portland in the fourth round of the 2017 US Open Cup.
