Soccer star Pelé's family shares updates from his hospital bed – Yahoo! Voices

Family members of Brazilian soccer superstar Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pelé, gathered by his hospital bed on Christmas Eve as he faces health challenges.
The 82-year-old former forward was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2021. Earlier this week, the Albert Einstein hospital in São Paulo said in a statement the colon cancer had advanced and Pelé was in “elevated care” around kidney and heart “dysfunctions.”
His daughter Kely Nascimento posted an image on Instagram Saturday showing family members sleeping by his side in the hospital.

“We are still here in the fight and with faith. Another night together,” she captioned the image.
His son Edson Cholbi Nascimento, a coach and former player known as Edinho, also posted an image on Saturday from the hospital, showing the father and son holding hands.
“Father… my strength is yours,” he captioned the post.
Pelé, widely considered one of the best soccer players in history, holds the Guinness World Record for Most Career Goals, scoring 1,279 goals in 1,363 between Sept. 7, 1956 and Oct. 1, 1977, and the only football player to have won three World Cups.
Pelé announced his official retirement from soccer in 1974, however he decided to continue playing and joined the North American Soccer League’s New York Cosmos before retiring in 1977.
FIFA granted a joint award to Pelé and Argentina’s Diego Maradona in December 2000, naming them the Player of the Century. The International Olympic Committee named him the Athlete of the Century in 1999.
After retiring from soccer, he was appointed to be a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in 1994, becoming the first athlete to receive that distinction. He was appointed a U.N. ambassador for ecology and the environment in 1992.
Pelé has been married three times and has seven children.

Thirty-four people have died in Erie County, New York, after a historic winter storm slammed Buffalo. Among those killed was 52-year-old Monique Alexander, a Buffalo woman who doted on her three grandchildren, said her daughter, Casey Maccarone. Alexander went out on Christmas Eve and never returned, Maccarone told ABC News.
Three people were killed when they tried to take a photo on a frozen lake in Arizona and fell through the ice, according to authorities. Deputies responded to a report Monday afternoon of two men and one woman who were walking on a frozen lake and fell through the ice, according to the Coconino County Sheriff's Office. The three victims were with five others at the lake at the time, sheriff's office spokesman Jon Paxton told ABC News.
A Supreme Court decision on Wednesday halted the looming rollback of the immigration restriction known as Title 42, preserving a controversial status quo at the southern border, which has seen record numbers of migrant encounters. The Title 42 restriction, which began during the Trump administration in the early days of COVID-19, was continued by the Biden administration and allows for the quick expulsion of migrants with the stated purpose of curbing the pandemic. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had tried to end the policy earlier this year — and was blocked by a judge — a separate court ruling set a Dec. 21 expiration date for Title 42, finding it "arbitrary and capricious," with minimal public health impact.
Starting Jan. 5, people flying from China will need a negative COVID-19 test within two days of their departure in order to enter the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday. The newly announced restrictions come amid what the CDC called a "surge" in cases of COVID-19 in China as well as a "lack of adequate and transparent" data being reported by the Chinese government. Given this, the CDC highlighted concerns about being unable to monitor newly emerging variants of the virus.
An alleged serial killer in the California city of Stockton has been linked to a seventh murder in the region, according to an amended complaint that charged the suspect with four additional counts of murder. Wesley Brownlee, 43, was arrested in October in connection with the unprovoked murders of six men who were fatally shot between April 2021 and September 2022. Five of the killings were committed in Stockton; one was in Oakland, about 70 miles away, police said.

A Princeton University student who was found dead on the New Jersey campus this fall died by suicide, the prosecutor's office said Wednesday. The body of 20-year-old Misrach Ewunetie was found near university tennis courts on Oct. 20, nearly one week after she went missing. An autopsy by the Middlesex Regional Medical Examiner's Office has determined she died from "bupropion, escitalopram and hydroxyzine toxicity" and her death has been ruled a suicide, the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office said.
Fees for phone calls for people incarcerated in America's prisons have skyrocketed in the past three years — with the industry costing families nearly $1 billion a year — according to the Prison Policy Initiative, a think tank. Titled the Martha Wright-Reed Just and Reasonable Communications Act, the bill, which passed with bipartisan support in the House and Senate last week, will allow for the price of intrastate inmate phone calls to be regulated by the FCC. Barry Croft Jr., a militia member who plotted to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, was sentenced Wednesday to 19 years and seven months in prison. This comes one day after his fellow militia member, Adam Fox, was sentenced to 16 years in prison. Fox, 39, and Croft, 47, "intended to kidnap Governor Whitmer from her vacation cottage near Elk Rapids, Michigan" in 2020 and use "destructive devices to facilitate their plot by harming and hindering the governor’s security detail and any responding law enforcement officers," according to the Department of Justice.
A Tampa police officer has been fired after dragging a woman on the ground following an arrest, the department said in a statement. The Tampa police department fired officer Gregory Damon following an internal investigation that determined he violated multiple departmental policies while booking a suspect into the Orient Road Jail on Nov. 17. According to officials, Tampa police responded to a call regarding an individual sleeping outside the Tampa Family Health Center and refusing to leave despite requests made by employees.

Marking the four-year anniversary of Paul Whelan's detention in Russia, the Biden administration vowed on Wednesday to continue efforts to bring the former Marine home.
