No, it’s nothing to do with Sports Story
Back in August we were sideswiped by the news of Soccer Story‘s existence. A pixel art sports RPG with 50% of its title dedicated to the word ‘Story’ that isn’t anything to do with Sidebar Games’ Golf Story nor its hotly-anticipated follow-up Sports Story? Surely it can’t be!
Well, it turns out that it can be, and it has landed itself a Switch release date of 29th November, 2022 – as if there won’t be enough football around at that point.
No More Robots and Panic Barn have released the above trailer to give the lowdown on the game’s story – a surprisingly ambitious plot about reuniting a broken world through the power of football is not what we initially expected from the cute sports game. The retro-inspired visuals certainly share some similarities to the aforementioned sports-focussed RPG stories, though there are enough 3D elements in the environments to ensure that it’s not a straight-up copy.

– Drop your soccer ball and play anywhere! The world is full of goals, puzzles and secrets – it’s up to you to find them!
– Play a single-player story full of quirky characters, quests, rogue refs, and wacky soccer-adjacent sports
– Build your soccer career and do battle against the fiercest soccer teams like literal sharks, toddlers, old-age pensioners, and ninjas
– Save soccer and restore peace and harmony to the world
– Grab a friend for a four-player local multiplayer match mode with a full roster of teams and animal captains
– FISHING MINIGAME
Without an eShop page already established, we have no word on what price we can expect Soccer Story to go for when it kicks off later this month. But with the release of Sports Story coming in December, you know that this is going to be a winter of BLANK Story RPG fun.

I love soccer and i love rpg adventures, so instant day one purchase for me if it doesnt come to steam.
It looks like it could be a decent game on its own merits but the title still doesn’t sit right with me and makes me very hesitant to go near it.
Complete rip off of golf story and looks fun.
But can’t get on board as I hate the word Soccer, its football
I got excited there for a minute. Thought the devs pushed up the release date for Sports Story. Damn it!

This already looks better than Mario Strikers. I’m in.
Definitely would get this, would probably be more fun than FIFA.
I’ll stick with ‘Nintendo Pocket Football Club’ on 3DS.
It does look like it’s own thing and nicely made at that. But that name is so obviously trying to tie it to Golf Story’s success, it makes me very dubious about whether or not it is actually good.
If you can’t even be original with your title, are you going to be original elsewhere?
Sounds promising. And can we get off the title’s case? While an intentional nod isn’t ruled out, what is the pool of sufficiently indicative alternatives here anyway? In all irony, it’s actual "ripoffs" that seem to unleash the thesaurus on their titles if need be.😆
It’s coming to Xbox via Gamepass so I will check it out there when it drops.

@Bunkerneath Same here. Never got the sense of American "football" where the ball is carried around the majority of the time and kicking is treated as an afterthought.
Why not just call it, I don’t know, tackleball or brawlball?
Kairosoft would like to have a word with all these naming wannabes.
Naming-wise, it does feel like a cheap cash-in on the Golf Story name. But the game itself looks pretty cool. I also can’t bring myself to call the sport ‘Soccer’, so mentally I’m naming it ‘Football Fiction’
